It's early January in Washington, D.C.

Outside the U.S. Capitol, an angry crowd is gathering.

They chant, fight for Trump and carry pro-Trump flags and slogans.

They break through security and go on to create havoc in the building itself.

The riot would lead to the deaths of five people.

But in the aftermath, an extraordinary rumor started to take shape across social media.

It's suggested that the rioters were not actually supporters of Trump,

but instead members of a far-left movement called Antifa,

short for anti-fascist.

The rumours reached radio, TV, and even later the same day,

the floor of the House of Representatives itself.

I don't know if the reports are true, but the Washington Times has just reported

some pretty compelling evidence from a facial recognition company,

showing that some of the people who breached the Capitol today were not Trump supporters.

They were masquerading as Trump supporters, and in fact,

were members of the violent terrorist group Antifa.

But this wasn't true, and the Washington Times later issued a correction.

The security services continue to state they have no evidence

that Antifa was present on Capitol Hill that day.

But the idea still persists.
