I would say it is a scam for lawyers to gain financially, but it's also a scam for journalists and documentarians, quote, unquote. People like to make advocacy pictures, Hollywood, people who write books,

to gain wealth, status, power by promoting the innocence of a convicted or formally convicted criminal.

So I would consider it an organized crime, much like a mafia.
