Architect Frank Gehry died last month. For much of his career, he was considered a titan of his field.

But that wasn't always the case.

In 1978, he dramatically remodeled a Santa Monica, California house.

Lots of neighbors thought that house was hideous.

The guy from over there came over one day when he saw it finish,

and he said he didn't like it.

And I said, why don't you like it? And he said, well, it's just strange.

That's Gary in a 60 Minutes interview in 2002. Now, Gary and his wife bought the house,

initially a pink California bungalow in 1977. He thought it was a wonderful opportunity to experiment with building materials,

so he wrapped much of the house in a new exterior made of corrugated metal and chain link fencing,

though parts of the pink bungalow still poked out from behind the new industrial facade.

He also built huge, tilted glass cube windows, modernist windows that poked out at various angles.

Gary told the American Institute of Architects that some neighbors were perplexed.

They'd never seen anything like it.

Others were downright incensed.

The lady, two doors down, was a lawyer, and she went to the city and tried to stop me.
