Summary

What does the separation of church and state actually protect, and why does it matter to all of us? This week, Jonathan sits down with Americans United President & CEO Rachel Laser (who somehow balances leading one of the country’s foremost constitutional advocacy organizations while teaching yoga on the side) for a conversation about one of the most important (and often misunderstood) principles in American democracy. Together, they explore how the Constitution protects religious freedom, why those protections belong to everyone, and what happens when government and religion become too closely intertwined. Rachel breaks down the growing influence of Christian Nationalism, why patriotism isn’t the same as religious identity, and how some political movements are saying the quiet part out loud. They also discuss recent debates over displaying the Ten Commandments in public schools, the importance of creating space for every belief system, and why defending church-state separation is ultimately about protecting freedom…not limiting faith. Hey Better Babes. Welcome back to Getting Better. One thing about me, I am passionate about the separation of church and state. There's a really large conversation around separation of church and state, what it means to us constitutionally, what it means in our laws. And it can sound really heady and it can sound really overwhelming. But I want you to know you have a voice. And there's an organization that is amplifying your voice and making it easier for you to get in this fight. And that's Americans United for separation of church and state.

So there's really organization that is amplifying your voice and making it easier for you to get in this fight. And that's Americans United for separation of church and state. So there's really no better person to come on and teach us about separation of church and state where we are today in America and where we're going and how we can like get in while it's like not a snowball that's totally creamed down the bottom of the hill for us to kind of like stop it before it's like completely out of control. And that person is Rachel Lazar, who is the president

and CEO of Americans United for separation of church and state. Lawyer, activist, advocate,

0:47.6

also moonlights as a yoga teacher, right up my alley. So let's get into our conversation

0:51.1

with Rachel Lazar and figure out how you can become empowered on the fight of separation of church and state.

0:57.4

Rachel, welcome to getting better. How are you? I am well. Thanks so much for having me.

1:01.4

Thank you so much for coming and thank you so much for doing the work that you're doing because, wow. I mean, I thought that erosion was like a natural phenomenon where there's like erosion of like water and lakes and like rivers and stuff.

1:13.5

And that is erosion, but there's also an erosion of the separation between church and state that we got to understand better.

1:19.5

And I just, if I hear one more person that I love say like, I just don't do politics, I don't want to talk about it.

1:25.1

And the words of Rupal talking to Joy Behar that one time in 1997,

1:28.1

well, you better because it's going down. So just for starters, can you tell us? Separation of church

1:34.9

and state, what does it mean? And is it guaranteed to us? It's promised to us in the Constitution.

1:41.3

It's embedded and baked into the First Amendment's promise of religious freedom,

1:45.9

and the founders who got certain things very wrong got this right and told us that this is part of

1:52.8

the promise of religious freedom that you have to separate church from state in order to secure

1:58.6

freedom for everyone to believe as they choose.

2:01.6

So it's promised to us, but today it's being undermined right and left.

2:06.6

It's very much under attack.

2:08.6

And I think it's under attack because the religious extremists who are attacking it

2:13.6

want America to be a country that privileges a certain type of person. They want to

2:20.6

maintain these traditional power structures in this country that we've actually continued to

2:26.4

advance beyond in order to fulfill our ideals. And so church-state separation is getting in their
