And now the first in a special BBC documentary series is Al Qaeda winning.

Owen Bennett Jones reports on the global battle for hearts and minds.

Ally is a bright, bouncy, five-year-old boy.

With a cheeky smile, dimples, and eyes squeezed, shattered in concentration,

he's learnt this song by heart.

But it's not a nursery rhyme.

It's a tribute to the late Abu Musab al-Zakawi,

the Al Qaeda leader in Iraq, a man who used to behead people on camera.

A lion steadfast as a mountain he sings,

a sword for the battlefield, indomitable warrior swift as a steed.

Ally lives in Jordan, and his father describes himself as an al Qaeda strategist,

as he reclines in his sofa he grins with delight as his son performs.

More than 3,000 kilometers away in Peshawar, Pakistan,

another boy, a teenager called Jahangir, moves to a rather different beat.

Can we pretend to be when ourselves aren't free?

As Jahangir sings, he's also watched by a father beaming with pride.

The Islamists in Peshawar have tried to ban music,

just listen to father chuckles, even in a shadow of the Taliban.

Two boys, two tunes, two world views.
