Summary

In this episode, I tackle a hot debate sparked by a personal story: Is AI the end of creativity or the start of something new? While hanging with friends in Nashville, I used AI to create a song in 24 seconds, which led to some strong reactions. Critics say AI is killing creativity, but I see it as a tool, much like how digital cameras or Photoshop once were. Let’s break down how AI fits into the creative landscape and why the real magic still comes from us.

Some highlights we explore:

  • The backlash and fear surrounding AI in creative industries

  • Why AI isn’t replacing creativity, but enhancing it

  • The historical cycles of resistance to new creative tools

Enjoy!

So recently I shared an experience on my email newsletter that sparked a bit of a debate.

0:11.6

I'm not going to lie.

0:12.6

I guess it wasn't entirely unexpected, but I was traveling with friends in Nashville and

0:17.7

who were literally in the car, a friend of mine introduced this tool to me,

0:22.0

which essentially allowed me to create an entire song in 24 seconds. The result was this hilarious,

0:28.2

playful, a bit cheesy for sure, but a pretty dope, I would call it like a summer jam that was

0:34.6

called Lemonade Love Escape and that has all laughing, nodding, and not ironically

0:39.4

singing along. And that song continued to pop into our heads throughout the rest of the weekend

0:44.7

there in Nashville. And for a little additional context, I dictated this prompt into the phone

0:51.3

while we were driving down the road. And I was trying to sort of break, you know,

0:55.0

introduce a prompt that might, you know, create confusion in the, uh, the AI tool. So I said,

1:00.3

a teenage boy and his teenage girlfriend run away to a deserted island and open a lemonade stand,

1:04.9

make the style a Swedish electronic dance style with just one or two simple verses that repeat. So it's a great and easy

1:12.6

sing-along simple lyrics. You know, that was the prompt. And in, as I mentioned, like 20-something

1:18.1

seconds, we were left with a catchy tune that we couldn't help but sing along to. For the rest

1:25.7

of the weekend, I'd love to play a little bit of that here.

1:28.5

It was fun, it was easy,

1:29.8

and it really got me thinking about the role of AI in songmaking,

1:33.6

in particular, and creativity more general.

1:36.1

I did think it would be important to dedicate an episode here,

1:39.6

a micro show to it.

1:42.6

Today's episode is brought to you by Never Play It Safe.
