Summary

Is 1 John meant to test if you are truly saved? In this episode, Jon Moffitt responds to a sermon from Paul Washer at the Shepherds Conference 2026 where 1 John is used as a test of genuine faith. Jon explains why this is a misapplication and walks through the original purpose of the letter. 1 John is meant to strengthen assurance rather than create doubt. Jon also highlights areas of agreement and offers clearer biblical paths for applying similar warnings. If you want clarity on assurance and how to read 1 John rightly, this episode is for you. Is First John a test for Christians to see if they're really a believer?

0:07.3

Well, in Paul Walsher's sermon at the 26th Shepherds Conference, he used First John as a test for believers.

0:16.3

And in this episode, we're going to examine that section of the sermon.

0:20.2

And I'm going to show you that it's not. That is a misapplication. First John was written for a specific reason. And we need to use it for that particular reason. So stay tuned. As we look at First John, there are multiple areas where I agree with Paul Washer, and I offer some suggestions on where to go either there in Peter or James if he's going to use the application he wants to use. So stay tuned.

Ever read the Bible and walk away feeling like you're failing? No matter how hard you try, you're never measuring up. That's not a motivation problem. That's a reading

0:56.0

problem. Most people have never been taught how to read the Bible the way Jesus taught it. So when they

1:01.4

hear things like, be perfect, deny yourself, take up your cross. They assume it's all about trying

1:07.3

harder. But what if that's not what Jesus was doing at all? What if the law isn't meant

1:12.3

to fix you but to reveal your need for a Savior? And what if the gospel isn't advice, but an announcement

1:18.5

of what Christ has already done for you. That's the difference between law and gospel. And once

1:24.3

you see it, everything changes. Clarity, rest, and confidence. In the Bible

1:28.9

according to Jesus, I show you how to read scripture the way Jesus intended. So you stop

1:34.3

feeling crushed and confused and start living with confidence and rest in Christ. You can get

Thank you. You can get your copy of the book at Theocast.org. Thanks for listening to another episode of Theocast. I'm John Moffitt. I'm the host and the pastor of Grace Reform Church in Springfield, Tennessee. And if you're new to Theocast, what is this all about? Well, we are here about pulling the clutter off the gospel and talking about how the gospel is the power of God under salvation. And that message matters. So we want to look at how

2:19.4

the gospel really does come to us in all of Scripture. So all of Christ and all of Scripture for all

2:25.0

of our life. And I'm excited to talk about that today. How we get the gospel right matters more

2:31.4

than almost any other doctrine in the world. And if you do not

2:34.9

understand who God is and who God is for you and your relationship to God, then nothing else in the

2:41.1

world matters. What matters if a man gains the whole world, but yet loses his soul? So that's what we

2:46.2

want to talk about today. And if you want to learn more about our ministry, we have a lot of stuff available.
