Summary

This week on the Nightmare on Film Street horror movie podcast, your hosts Kimmi and Jon are talking brand new supernatural irish folklore horror Hokum with writer/director Damian McCarthy!

Hokum follows a disgruntled author (Adam Scott) as he travels to an Inn in rural Ireland where his deceased parents spent their honeymoon, to spread their ashes. Then spookies ensue... Like the appearance of a strange bunny with bulging eyes, a honeymoon suite with a locked gate for an entrance, and an old folktale about an evil witch who snatches children to the underworld.

Note: This is a spoiler-free discussion, we stick to chattin inspiration, irish folklore, and crafting a good scare, not spoiling the film, so you're free to listen to this before catching Hokum!

Hokum hits theatres May 1st.

And this week we are joined on the podcast by Damian McCarthy to talk about his new

horror film, Hocom.

0:44.5

Which, if you haven't heard of Hocom, is this Irish folklore supernatural horror movie

0:49.4

with Adam Scott, where he travels to a remote Irish inn to go spread the ashes of his parents and it gets

0:56.7

scary as heck from there. Yeah, you might remember Damian McCarthy's previous films caveat and

1:02.8

oddity. Audity is so fucking scary guys if you haven't seen it yet. I'm pretty sure it's on

1:07.0

shutter. So it's super easy to watch. Definitely check it out.

1:11.1

It was on our best of the year list when first came out. And Hocom is just as fucking scary. I would say it's maybe his scariest yet. And I'm not, you know what? I'm not overselling. I'm just going to stand confidently on that. I think it's pretty fucking scary. Yeah. What's great about Damien McCarthy is that the way

1:28.6

he builds his scares is completely different than anybody else. Like, we're all familiar with the

1:33.5

James Wan template when you're watching a new conjuring movie. You can kind of know exactly when to look

1:39.1

away. It is so hard to predict where and when the ghouls are coming in a Damian McCarthy movie, and they are coming for you. Yeah, and that was something that was really cool about our interview, which it's good that I mentioned this at the top of the show, that we don't... Sorry, guys, there's a fucking storm. Holy shit. I don't know if you can hear that. There's a, there's so fucking fitting. It's a really cool storm right now.

2:01.4

The lightning is so good. Some Frankenstein lightning happening outside right now. It's super fitting, though, to talk about the scares, because that's something that we touch on a lot in the interview. We talk about, you know, where he starts, whether he starts with the folklore or the big frights that he builds. And we get to talk a lot

2:18.8

about his filmmaking process, but we do not spoil the film. So you're listening to this ahead of

2:23.9

release. The movie is out May 1st in theaters. You can listen to the entire interview without the

2:28.9

movie being spoiled. It'll only enrich the experience because you'll get a little bit inside the director's head. Yeah, absolutely. Like, you know, we don't. We really enjoyed this movie and we didn't want to spoil anything for anybody. Because we went in not knowing very much and it scared the pants off us. Yeah, yeah. And I've been avoiding the trailers. I didn't want to know anything before I watched it. I knew it was going to be super spooky. And it was. I knew the stuff from like the stills, and I was like, how does that make a movie? And it does. Yeah. So we're going to
