Over the last three decades, Irish society has attempted to come to terms with some of the darker aspects of our history, particularly cases of institutional abuse.

In this episode, we're going to explore the history behind another dark chapter in our past, but one that has received surprisingly little attention.

Although it's often hard to fathom in the 1950s, around 20,000 people in the 26 counties

of the Republic of Ireland were institutionalised in mental asylums. That was over 1% of the entire

adult population, the highest rate of any country in the world at the time.

To put that into further context, there were more people in mental asylums than all other institutions, including prisons, combined.

Now, the conditions in these asylums were often very poor

and the treatments some patients were subjected to was appalling.
