The narrative of the that conflict here in Ireland is very much innocent little Palestinians

living there, big, bad European and American Jews came to that area and kicked them off

their land. And that is, I suppose, the way in which that conflict is very dishonestly presented

in the Irish media, in Irish schools, in the sort of general cultural noises that Irish people absorb about what's happening in the Middle East.

So there's always this identification with the little guy.

And I think it also, it doesn't help Israel's cause

that it is so overwhelmingly militarily stronger

because Ireland was a small nation,

as we would tell it, in the shadow of an imperial power right beside us

for 800 years. And we have this particular affinity with the kind of warfare that the

Palestinian cause is all employed. You know, guerrilla tactics, insurgents, not fighting with a

uniform, terrorism in the case of the provisional IRA. And therefore, there's this kind of affinity with the little plucky upstart fighting against

the big, well-armed neighbour.
