Music: Opening and closing this interview are the sounds of Bridgette playing the harp with her Grandfather and a chorus of wind at Wimahl, the original Chinook name for the part of the Columbia river which she lives near. Wimahl is “Nch’i-Wàna” (or “Nchi wana”) to Sahaptin (Ichishkíin Sɨ́nwit)-speaking peoples of the river’s middle course in so called Washington. And the river is known as “swah'netk'qhu” by Sinixt people, who live in the river's beginning reaches in Canada. Wimahl is the largest river system in the Pacific Northwest, originating in Canada and flowing 1,253 miles to Moananuiākea, also known as the Pacific Ocean. The lower part of Wimahl flows 146 miles from Bonneville Dam to Moananuiākea.
