President Trump called him a great guy.

Former President Clinton called him a committed philanthropist.

He was a friend and advisor to the wealthy and powerful, a financial guru who flew his

patrons around the world on his private jet, and often to parties on the island he owned

in the Caribbean and his palatial residence in Palm Beach, Florida, where there were always

lots of young women, very young women.

More than a decade ago, the feds were on to Jeffrey Epstein, preparing to indict him

for sex trafficking.

But the then US attorney in Miami, Alex Acosta, now President Trump's Secretary of

Labor, cut a deal that permitted the financier to plead guilty to a less serious state solicitation

charge and was allowed to serve a lenient 13-month sentence with work release so he could

spend his days at that Palm Beach home.

Now prosecutors in New York have indicted Epstein on new charges, charging that for years

he recruited multiple underage women, some as young as 14, to perform sex acts for cash.

And when the FBI searched his home in New York, they found a cash of hundreds of nude and

semi-nude photos of young girls, a sign that as one of the prosecutors put it, Epstein

had not left his past behind.

How did Epstein get away with it for so long?

And what should we make of Acosta's vigorous defense of that sweetheart deal?
