You're always being told you have to read the classics. But what if you literally can't?

My name is Faith Moore, and I'm launching Storytime for grown-ups, a podcast that will help you learn to read

classic literature. For a long time, classic literature was inaccessible to me. I wanted to read

Dickens and Austin, Bronte and Victor Hugo,

but I couldn't. I'd open the books and read the first pages, and it was like reading a foreign

language. I knew most of the words in isolation, but they came together on the page and meant nothing.

It was my secret shame. I love to read. I love stories, but the great books of the past

were closed to me. Maybe you feel that way too. Over time, I found I was able to crack the code.

The key is immersion and support. When I was a teacher, one of my favorite times in the day was

story time. When you read aloud

to your students, you pause from time to time to make sure they're still with you. You define a word,

you summarize, you comment on the action. You do it sparingly, thoughtfully, so they're not taken out

of the story, but they can still follow along. You're never too old for story time.

Each season of story time for grownups, I'll read a book aloud, one chapter per episode.

As I read, I'll pause from time to time to give brief explanations that will make it easier to follow along,

like an audiobook with built-in notes. And the more you listen, the easier the

language will seem. For season one, we'll be reading my favorite book of all time, Jane Eyre by
