My De Nations rise and fall, great kings and leaders come and go.

God reigns forever. He has ultimate authority. So does this give us as Christians the right to

0:36.0

despise earthly authority? That's the question Alistair Begg tackles today on Truth for Life.

0:42.1

This is one of his most popular messages that's included in our Encore 2023 series.

0:48.1

We're looking at the opening verses in the book of Esther.

King Ahazuerus is presented to us as a big deal. He is a big deal. Under any standards of kings

1:09.0

and dominions and authorities and powers in the study of history, this particular king

1:17.7

stands out as significant and we're told as we read the opening verses of the extent of his

2:14.9

That's some celebration, that's some feast. Presumably people did not stay there for the entire

2:20.6

six months but the celebration went on for that length of time and people would have come and gone

2:25.9

and perhaps returned. And it was a state of symbol that he could actually identify himself with

2:35.0

the longevity of this celebration and have so many people come. He then follows her up with a feast

2:41.4

that lasts for seven days, a kind of garden party and that is for the ancillary workers it would

2:48.8

seem. Perhaps those who have been responsible for making sure that the 180 day feast had been such

2:54.3

a success. And we're told there that the army of Persia and of media and the nobles and the

3:01.7

governors of the provinces were before him. And that picture of coming before him is a picture of
