Summary

John Patrick Addis was a state trooper, crime scene investigator, bush pilot, ex-convict, UFO fanatic, survivalist-and a pro at manipulating women. His criminal madness stretched from Alaska to Mexico-leaving countless victims in his wake. Sgt. Jim McCann and John Addis worked together as detectives for the Alaska State Police in the 1970s, and at the time, he was married to his first wife, who later divorced him because of domestic abuse. The couple lived in a cabin in the remote woods that didn't have running water or heat. Addis enjoyed hunting caribous in the Alaskan wilderness, but he was also a talented young detective with a mind for forensic science, and he was so gifted that he instructed law enforcement from all over Alaska in crime scene analysis. Then one day, Addis got into an argument with his wife, and she said she wanted to leave him, so she jumped out of their car. He soon began chasing her, but she was able to escape and soon was granted a divorce. After the divorce, Addis quickly re-married and his personality turned from bad to worse. He abandoned his wilderness lifestyle and became a middle class homemaker, and soon quit his job at the state patrol. Then, he abducted his four children from his first marriage and fled to Michigan, where he was involved in several robberies. He was eventually arrested and served one year in prison for parental child abduction. Over the next decade, he jumped parole in Alaska and went throughout the United States posing as a fitness instructor, screen writer, and novelist. He was a master at changing his identity, which helped him keep above the law. I speak to Glenn Puit. The author of 'Ghost: The True Story of One Man's Descent into Madness and Murder.' He is an investigative journalist and was a lead reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal for twelve years, where he covered violent crime and capital murder trials.

1:36.8	from Las Vegas. I now live back in Las Vegas after a two-year stint in Ohio, but your books mostly cover crimes and serial
1:47.5	killers from the Las Vegas area. So what is your background and what got you
1:51.4	started in true crime?
1:53.0	Well, I've been a reporter in the newspaper industry for almost 23 years and I spent 11 years as an investigative and criminal justice reporter in Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Review Journal.
2:08.0	And, you know, for about the first seven years of my career all I did was cover crime
2:15.0	murder fires car accidents and really focused on the most interesting
2:21.4	homicide cases in Las Vegas.
2:24.0	And, you know, then I moved over to cover the district courts of Las Vegas and Clark County and
2:31.0	covered a murder trial there that
2:33.1	completely frightened me and gave me the creeps about a woman named
2:37.1	Berkeley Lee West who had killed her mother and
2:39.6	stored her in a storage shed for several years and then a brother was missing and husband she was
2:48.8	murdered and she was a prime suspect but never charged and I was sitting in the back of the courtroom and you know it's just an amazing story and I said to myself that you know someone ought to write a book about this case and that kind of got me thinking about doing it and
3:07.0	I eventually after thinking about it for a few more months which I'm sure a lot of true crime writers and aspiring true crime writers
