Summary

Edward Berger's "All Quiet On The Western Front" is nominated for 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best International Feature, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Netflix WWI film recently won 7 BAFTA awards, including Best Film, and has been a critical success since its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. We've been fortunate to interview many of the Film's cast and crew members this awards season, but for this time, we wanted to spotlight some of the below-the-line talents who are all nominated at this year's Oscars. First, we have Will Mavity'sinterviews with the BAFTA-winning cinematographer James Friend, then the BAFTA-winning sound designer Markus Stemler, followed by production designer Christian M. Goldbeck. Then to end things, we have Dan Bayer's interview with makeup artist Heike Merker. We hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at one of the most technically well-crafted films of 2022. So getting into it specifically, one of the most obvious aspects that stands out with this particular film is that probably 80% of the shots are in the elements.

0:51.2

There's lots of mud, there's lots of rain, there's lots of snow. And as I understand it,

0:57.1

it was a pretty practical shoot. So when it looked muddy and it looked cold, it was. So tell me a

1:05.9

little bit about the experience of really shooting in the elements like that. I mean, we wanted to capture the elements,

1:12.6

so the best way in order to capture those elements is to be in them. And we timed it in that time

1:19.6

of year where the elements were pretty brutal. But as brutal as they were on the cast and the crew, they look great on camera.

And also they need, so the breath was real, the, you know, the red cheeks were real,

1:36.6

the, the shivering was real, to be perfectly honest.

It left very little to the imagination.

So, to be perfectly honest, I'm doing myself a bit of a

1:49.8

disservice here, but it kind of made my life and job a lot easier because it kind of felt more

1:58.0

like documenting something than it did engineering something.

It felt more like capturing than,
