Summary

HBO's new miniseries "White House Plumbers" just premiered last night and stars Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux as Howard Hunt and Gordon Liddy, who were infamously responsible for the Watergate Scandal, which shook the foundation of politics in Washington and the country as a whole back in the 1970s. Director David Mandel, who directed all six episodes of the miniseries, talked with me about his work on the miniseries, how much he loves this era of history, coming up with the miniseries' visual aesthetic, working with the actors and more! Be sure to give it a listen and check out the miniseries if you haven't already, which is now airing new episodes weekly on HBO and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy awards. Howard, the president asked for a real son of a bitch to handle this Pentagon League.

0:16.8

What do you need?

0:18.5

I want you to meet Gordon Liddy.

0:20.2

Toughest guy I know. He'll hold his hand in the flame of a candle. I do not bend and I do not break. What's the trick? There's a one. Gets third degree burns every time. Please do it. David, first of all, congratulations on the new show, White House Plumbers. I had a chance to watch all five episodes of the new miniseries. Yes. So

0:39.6

I'm all caught up with it and I had a great time watching it. First of all, I want to ask,

0:46.1

we've seen this story before told from other perspectives from. Yeah. And so this time around,

0:52.2

we're seeing the point of view of the perpetrators, the villains, if you will.

0:57.6

So can you talk to me first about how do you go about humanizing these infamous characters who we've heard so much about over the years?

1:06.7

I'm going to say two things. I'm going to answer your second. I'm going to answer your main question second, but this is what I was going to say two things. I'm going to answer your second. I'm going to answer your main

1:12.1

question second, but I wanted, this is what I was going to say. One of the things that's funny about,

1:16.1

because I am a fan, I am a consumer of all Watergate stories, you know, give me all the President's

1:21.9

men, give me dick, you know what I mean? I love them all. Do you know what i mean i i enjoy the milieu um so what i was

1:29.7

going to say is the one thing that's very funny to me that in every one of those shows there's always

1:34.6

the moment of like the flashlights at the water at the water gate and the tape on the door and

1:42.2

you know the security guard making the phone call or on the

1:45.2

walkie-talkie. That's in every Watergate show ever. There's not a Watergate show that

1:51.4

doesn't have it. And yet, these guys, these guys who did the deed, maybe you hear their names.

1:58.9

Sometimes they're just referred to as the burglars.
