Millions of people from around the world come to walk this mountain path.

In the distance I can see the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas.

And lining this circuit, are hundreds of brightly coloured Tibetan prayer

flags which hang from trees. And on the other side, Tibetan prayer wheels, which people spin as they walk this route.

This is a route so famous because it's close to the residents of one of the world's best known spiritual leaders. I'm Regina Fijinarthen and I've come to the North

Indian town of Durham Shala to meet the Dalai Lama.

A religious figurehead who's rubbed shoulders with world leaders and royalty,

his story also represents a struggle. For six decades, he's lived here in exile.

From remote mysterious Tibet, reports as shrouded in mystery as the country itself.

News of an uprising against Chinese...

In 1959, Chinese troops clashed with thousands of Tibetans during an uprising.

China lays claim to Tibet a mountainous region which separates it from India,

but many Tibetans want independence, fearing for his safety a 23 year old monk fled.

The young Dalai Lama revered by his people as a living Buddha was reported under arrest by the Reds but according to other sources

is safely in hiding.

After a two-week journey on horseback the Dalai Lama arrived in India a country which

gave him sanctuary.

The 23-year-old God King of Tibet makes his first public appearance since his escape from the Chinese

communists.

The Dalai Lama is greeted by enthusiastic crowds.

Now the Dalai Lama is clearly among friends.

Most of the people in this area are Buddhists who hold him in the highest veneration.
