Summary

"Renfield" is a horror, action comedy from director Chris McKay ("The Lego Batman Movie" and "The Tomorrow War") which tells the story of a co-dependent relationship between Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and his long-suffering familiar Renfield (Nicholas Hoult). An intentionally silly, fun, and over-the-top comedy with lots of gore, actor Ben Schwartz plays the son of a mob boss who gets tied up in Renfield and Dracula's conflict. Schwartz and McKay were kind enough to let me interview them during the press junket for the film (my first-ever in-person interview), which you can listen to below! Thank you, and enjoy! It's been a very, very exciting process, seeing Universal kind of go through a reboot,

0:56.0

if you will, of how to handle classic horror movie monsters on screen now. Chris, can you first

1:01.3

start off with explaining what was the idea to kind of center this around like a codependent

relationship instead of like a straight remake, which is what we typically see within the marketplace.

1:11.6

Yeah, I mean, we're really lucky that Universal, you know, kind of allowed us to have sort of a cock-eyed point of view on the Dracula story and not do something that's sort of a typical, you know, kind of a typical Dracula story, whether it's an origin story or just watching him,

1:27.5

you know, sort of in modern times go after victims and that sort of thing.
