Summary

"Past Lives" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it instantly garnered universal acclaim, with many calling it the best of the festival. It has now gone on to be regarded as one of the year's best films overall, including winning the Gotham Award for Best Film and receiving nominations from the Critics Choice and Golden Globes for Best Picture. Composers Christopher Bear and Daniel Rossen were kind enough to spend some time talking about their gentle and moving score for the film, which quietly works its way over viewers to elicit an emotional response in a non-manipulative manner. Please be sure to check out the film, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories, including Best Picture, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for "Quiet Eyes." There is a word in Korean, enion. It means providence or fate.

0:19.8

Do you believe in that?

0:21.4

That's just something Koreans say to seduce them mine.

Hello everyone. Welcome to the Next Best Picture Podcast. I'm Giovanni Logo, and today I am joined by the composers of past lives, Christopher Baer, and Daniel Rosen.

0:34.8

Thank you so much for joining.

0:36.7

Yeah, thanks for having us. Well, I just have to say,

0:40.8

the score for past lives is probably some of the best film score I've heard all year. I constantly

0:45.4

listen to it, like every day when I'm either walking through New York or I just moved to New York

0:50.2

recently. So the whole film inherently is just very relatable. And I think every detail

0:55.0

about the film is so specific, whether it's the casting or locations or, of course, the music.

1:00.6

And I was just wondering, how did Celine Song approach you guys for the film? Was it very early on

1:06.6

in development? What was that like? Yeah, it was pretty early. I think we were on her radar

1:14.4

partially because maybe there was some association with the same time frame of the film with

1:20.5

our sort of heyday when she was a bit younger when we were out touring a lot. But yeah,

1:26.3

she got in touch. I think they were in the

1:27.9

early stages of filming, but we saw the script. They gave us the script and had some conversations

1:34.4

with her. But yeah. I was just also, I just love the score, the sound of it inherently. It exudes

1:42.1

so many feelings. It feels to me very lush and warm and

1:46.6

inherently like deeply romantic. And I was just wondering how the both of you decided to come together

1:52.2

to figure out what the sound would inherently be like. Did you always want to sound like this?
