If you're a fan of Hong Kong cinema, you've accepted that most of the time English subtitles are terrible.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

With this wave of new releases from companies like Eureka Films and 88 films,

we suddenly got a slew of new subtitles that can sometimes completely re-contextualize the movie experience.

Recently, 88 films put out Erotic Ghost Story in a big deluxe box set, and I was blown away

that they included a TV special from around the time of erotic's release.

That was English subtitled.

When I tweeted about it, I learned that Dylan Chung, the person

who had subtitled the main feature as well, was the person who had suggested, including

that little special as an extra. And looking into Dylan Chung's work, I learned that he had

done a bunch of subtitles for movies that had been coming out and was really thoughtful

in the way that he approached it, including taking on the heroic task of subtitling correctly a Stephen Chow film

with Forbidden City Cop.

I had the pleasure of talking to Dylan about how he got into subtitling, how he got into

his love for Hong Kong cinema, and what his general practice of going and doing

something that seems simple on the surface, but is actually incredibly complicated. So please,

enjoy this conversation with Dylan Chung. I would love to know how did you get subtitling movies,

specifically Hong Kong movies. Okay, so with all the current Hong Kong releases coming out in, especially like over in the

UK with Region B, there was basically someone who, I won't say his name because he's kind of a

private guy, but there's someone who's basically kind of has a hand in all of them.

Really? There's one person that does everything.

He's kind of like a middleman who manages to find like the best people to do everything.
