Summary

In 2014, Ruth Markel experienced just about the worst thing any mother can when she learned that her son Dan had been murdered. It would become even worse when she discovered that her in-laws had been involved in the murder-for-hire plot. Far from breaking under the grief, Ruth has become a tireless advocate for victims and their families. In 2022, the State of Florida passed the Markel Act enabling grandparents to petition courts for visitation rights in the case of a violent death. hopefully you listen to our last episode, which was episode number 125. We really want to get

right into it with Ruth today. So I suggest you go back, listen to that episode, or look it up,

0:49.6

because if you're not familiar, we're jumping right in today. So thank you, thank you, thank you,

0:53.9

so much for being here, Ruth. Thank you. I'm really delighted to be part of your program.

The title, Love and Murder, already says a lot, and maybe it's too familiar. It's a very good title,

1:06.8

and I'm looking forward to the podcast. Yes, I hope that you enjoy our rendition. I have to say

1:13.6

first that we are so truly sorry for your loss. Obviously in forms of media like this, sometimes

1:20.9

that part, that human part of it gets forgotten in the fact that this is such a huge and ongoing

1:26.9

story, and Andy and I really offer our deepest condolences for you. Thank you. I really appreciate it,

1:33.1

and I really have a lot of thanks for all the people who have that sensitivity to the fact that

1:39.4

the criminal system's operating, but basically we're still in grief, right? So it's important.

1:45.9

It is important, and I think that that is the genesis of your book, which is so beautifully written.

1:52.1

I know that you're a nice, experienced author that you've written a number of books,

1:56.9

but I do have to say that this one, it just gets to the heart of it. It is part memoir in a loving

2:03.5

tribute to your son, and also it very starkly and unflinchingly shows us what it is to be a homicide

2:12.4

survivor, and to go through this somewhat dehumanizing process.

2:18.2

Yes, let me let me a little bit talk about that because I think that's one of the things that

2:22.0

the book is really about the unveiling. There's two parts to the title, which I'll explain.
