Summary

Kaveh Akbar is the Iranian-American author of the critically acclaimed and heavily lauded novel Martyr! In our long-awaited conversation we dive deep into the themes of his powerful book, Martyr, which explores the human cost of so-called “collateral damage” and the real-world trauma often reduced to mere statistics in Western media. I had so much I wanted to ask Kaveh about the deeply personal and timely relevance of his work, especially in light of ongoing global events.

Growing up, Nymiduni, interview with Kaveh Akbar, most recently

0:41.0

the author of the fantastic debut novel, Martyr. If you haven't heard of this book by now,

0:46.9

I will be very surprised because it's been in New York Times bestseller. It shows up on so many

0:51.9

best of lists. And not to mention, the cover of the book is so hard to miss.

0:57.5

It's this beautiful yellow cover with this awesome illustration and it has an exclamation point in the

1:02.8

title, which is rare for a book title. But I absolutely love this book about a young man named Cyrus

1:08.2

Shams. So we share a last name, and it's about Cyrus's journey

1:12.2

in basically researching and writing about the concept of martyrs. It's about a lot more than that,

1:18.0

but that's one part of it. Cyrus is Iranian American, and he lost his mother to flight 655, which was

1:25.7

an Iranian airliner shot down by the U.S. Navy in 1988, a mistake that no one has

1:32.7

ever been held accountable for, let alone the U.S. government. This one event has tremendous

1:39.0

repercussions in Cyrus's life, which takes place in the U.S. mostly. But the book is full of so much that many of us

1:48.0

in the diaspora can relate to, and I really can't recommend it enough. I had so many questions for

1:54.1

Kave. I really couldn't fit them all into this one interview, but I loved our conversation,

1:59.6

got so much out of it, and I hope that you do too.

2:02.9

So with no further ado, my interview with Nimrudu Kauve-Akber.

2:08.7

First, Kauve, thank you so much for talking with me today.

2:11.9

Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited that we get to do this.

2:15.3

Yeah, me too. And I'm glad that I'm glad kind of that it's taken us so long to talk because my questions

2:21.5

have just been building and building and building.

2:23.6

If you see the notes that I have for this discussion, it's just, it's all over the place.

2:30.2

And really, like, I emailed you the other day because I was like, I need to talk to you because so much has been happening over.
