David K. Levine is an economist at the European University Institute and at Washington University in St. Louis. He is the author with Michele Boldrin of Against Intellectual Monopoly, an empirical study of the economics of intellectual property that concludes that IP is not necessary for innovation and as a practical matter is damaging to growth, prosperity and liberty.

Let's start by talking a little bit about your background and your bona fides. Who are you and why are you writing about intellectual monopoly?

Okay. Well, I am and have been for many years now an economics professor.

I mostly, for a long part of my career, we studied game theory and general equilibrium

theory as a dearest, and I was in fact drawn into the area of intellectual monopoly or property
