Summary

As we pioneer our way out from Earth to other planets and eventual the stars, our concept of time will change in more ways than just different calendars. We'll explore how interstellar civilizations might cope with everything from relativity to life extension and how century long voyages and time lags of communication over millions of worlds might be managed. Keeping track of time is tricky enough nowadays.

0:27.1

It's a whole different story when your clocks and calendars don't have 24 hours or 365

0:32.1

days, let alone run slower.

0:35.1

But that's barely the tip of the iceberg of problems with time facing

0:39.0

interstellar civilizations.

0:40.8

So today we'll be closing out our fifth season for Science and Futurism with Isaac

Arthur, and I am your host, the aforementioned Isaac Arthur.

As we say goodbye to 2019 and hello to 2020, it seemed appropriate to discuss time, so we'll

1:06.0

be looking at its impact on interstellar civilizations today, and we'll open 2020 up next week by contemplating

1:12.3

time travel.

1:14.0

Of course, time travel itself is a fairly ambiguous term.

1:18.1

It assumes time normally runs at a set and uniform pace, and that's nothing like the

1:23.1

case.

1:24.5

Time runs slower in gravity wells and when you're moving fast, and we happen to live

1:28.8

in one such gravity well and need to move very fast to get to any others out in the

1:33.0

galaxy in any sort of sane timeline.

1:36.5

And sane timeline is probably appropriate, because in many ways it's not the flow of time
