loves and first jobs, but I'm also wanting to take a pause and look at the transitions we didn't

see coming from Gailless Toddler to a more private teenager from a kid who used to talk to you all

the time to a kid who barely musters a syllable when you check in with them about their day.

These changes observed and absorbed at close range can be confounding. They can sometimes

even feel like rejection. So it seemed worth a minute to pause and think about intentional,

high self-awareness parenting at each stage with somebody who knows a thing or two.

Arielle Trost is this great friend of mine. We raised our kids together out in Piedmont,

California. We used to walk once a week when I lived there. And for a couple decades now,

she has been seeing patients of all ages. She focuses particularly on young people. And I have
