Hi there, from CNN. I'm Charlie Drever with the five things you need to know for Friday,

January 23rd. Around half the US is about to face one of the most intense winter storms in years.

More than 230 million people are under alerts for potential ice, heavy snow and extreme cold.

With more on what to expect, here's CNN meteorologist Chris Warren.

There's an ice storm warning for parts of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee.

This is when the ice can lead to long-term power outages and I would expect more warnings over the next day or two.

These alert stretch for more than 2,000 miles.

On top of the winter weather that's coming and really what's going to be kind of fueling this

or setting the stage is this cold air.

Dangerously cold air with over the next couple of morning some of these wind chills feeling

like 40 to 50 degrees below zero.

And my concern is that we are heading to a point that can be very explosive.

That's Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara speaking to CNN about the ongoing immigration crackdown in the city.

He says the work by local authorities to rebuild trust in the community after the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis officer is being threatened.

His warning comes as fear is growing after five-year-old Liam Conehoramos and his father were detained by ICE earlier this week, as he was coming home from preschool.

The father and Liam are now being held together at a detention facility in Texas.

The terrorizing of the children and the community, that's just horrifying.

We know that detaining children and families is wrong.

Speaking there is the attorney representing the family,

who says Liam's dad did everything right when they claimed asylum when entering the US.
