Megan McCain has entered the chat. When Jady Vance became vice president, I, like a lot of women I know, wanted to know more about his wife, Usha.

She's a Yale graduate, a former Supreme Court clerk, a Hindu mom raising Catholic kids,

and now the first South Asian second lady in American history.

But I wanted to know who she really is, how she thinks, how she parents, what she values,

and how she's navigating a life she never saw coming.

This is Ushah's first real in-depth on-camera interview, and I am incredibly grateful and humbled that she trusted me enough to do this.

We talked about everything. Her marriage to J.D., raising three young kids in a mixed faith home, how she's adjusting to life in the Naval Observatory,

and what she actually wants to do with this platform.

She even responded very generously to something personal that I shared for the first time during our conversation.

Citizen McCain. I'm so excited to have you. Come on. I'm so excited to talk to you. I just want to thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.

Well, thank you for having me on the show and please call me Usha. Okay. She gave me permission, you guys.

Okay. Okay. So I just have been so interested in you as a person. And I'm not trying to, like, freak you out. But ever since your husband was chosen to be vice president, my text chain with my girlfriends were just so excited about your role as second lady. You're so modern, and I just really wanted to know more about you,

which is how this opportunity came about. So I just want to know if we could start at the beginning.

You're from San Diego. I'm from Phoenix, a love a West Coast girl that made it to D.C.

Could you just tell me a little bit about growing up in San Diego? Your parents are so accomplished.

Your dad's a mechanical engineer. Your mother's a molecular biologist. I don't even know what that is, but it sounds very fancy.

Would you mind telling me a little bit just about growing up in San Diego?

Absolutely. My parents moved to San Diego in the 70s and 80s. And, I mean, they were pursuing higher education.
