Summary

Fresh off a week of anxiety and uncertainty, George Osborne reports to Ed Balls from Davos to give the inside track on what it was like to see Trump’s address in person and the murmurs from the Alps about what the President really wants. The pair also look at the reactions from Keir Starmer, European allies, and the Mark Carney speech that got everyone talking.

The pair then reflect on Robert Jenrick’s sacking and defection to Reform one week on. Has he truly put national interest above personal interest? Should the two parties come to an agreement to reunite the right of British politics? And could the defection of other Tories such as Andrew Rosindell help Kemi Badenoch change the party for the better?

Ed has also been on the European continent this week, visiting Versailles for the annual Franco-British Colloque. He speaks of his insights into growing acceptance of victory for the far-right National Rally in next year’s presidential election, a rumoured Macron return in 2032, and the need, now more than ever, for a stronger relationship across the Channel.

This is political currency with Ed Balls and George Osborne.

So we are remote today. I'm in London. George is still in Davos.

0:40.1

A health warning for our listeners. He has a very bad throat. He has been on the Davos Lash for the last two nights and, you know, it's even more unhealthy than a party conference. But the exciting thing is,

I was seeing a tweet from Faisal Islam, the BBC economics editor who said that yesterday,

0:50.2

for the Trump speech, 5,000 people in the room, people fighting to get in, world leaders,

0:57.3

foreign ministers were excluded in the crush. They couldn't get in, but George Osborne was there.

1:03.9

I know from a photo he sent me that he had a ringside seat. So despite the sore throat,

1:09.5

and presumably the multiple hangovers over three days,

1:12.6

you still heard the president. I mean, there are no lengths I won't go to to be able to report

1:17.5

to political currency listeners what's really going on in the world.

1:21.7

With that your main motivation, rather than schmoozing and networking and sort of being part of the

global elite.

1:28.7

It's all for the podcast.

1:34.6

You know, whether that involves elbowing out billionaires and world leaders to squeeze my way into the room to see Trump, I mean, it was literally like a crush.

1:37.9

It was like sort of they've just opened a door at a, you know, pop concert and you're

1:41.5

rushing in to get the front seat.

1:43.5

So that was all a bit

mad. And then last night watching Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons play his guitar

standing on a bar and seeing Katie Perry walking around. No wonder you've got a hangover.

And having a drink with Howard Lutnik, the US Commerce Secretary. Did you actually elbow a

world leader? I mean, as in like one kind of world leader to another, of course, but did you elbow

a world leader to get into the speech? I did what was required to be able to report to you and our other
