It is Friday, March 29th. I've been on vacation most of this week. When I got back last night, I wanted to catch up on the whole ditty situation.

Of course, I went to TMZ, as one does, where I was not surprised at all to see coverage of every possible

angle of the investigation into sex trafficking claims. It's kind of the perfect story for TMZ,

a combo of celebrity, scandal, money, some complex legal issues. And it comes at a good time for them,

because I've been hearing in recent years about the waning influence of the outlet in the social

media age. Harvey Levin, its very famous founder, is now in his 70s and still presiding over the

website, multiple TV shows. I've always been a curious observer of TMZ and Harvey. Like most people,

I'm often baffled and a little grossed out by some of its coverage, but as someone who works in news and has competed with TMZ for stories, I've always admired

its emphasis on original reporting, cutting through the spin, especially when it comes to Hollywood.

Going all the way back to the Mel Gibson anti-Semitic rant to Chris Brown assaulting Rihanna,

first reporting the death of Michael Jackson in 2009.

All huge stories, even if TMZ is known to pay their sources.

Alec Baldwin once called Harvey a, quote, festering boil on the anus of American media.

Pretty good quote.

But in the 20 years since its launch, the mainstream media has kind of become a lot more like

that festering boil, not the other way around.
