Villanova's Liam Murphy is quickly etching his name into the record books.
Fresh off shattering the NCAA 1500m record with a blistering 3:33.02 at the Raleigh Relays, Liam joins the show today to discuss his recent run of success on the track.
Since December, Liam has set school records in the 3,000m (with a time of 7:35.47) and the 5,000m (with a time of 13:10.42) in addition to being a key cog on the school’s relay teams.
The Millstone, New Jersey, native’s records and achievements could fill a small tome–in addition to the 3,000 and 5,000m school records he also holds the Villanova indoor mile record (3:53.85) and was a member of the 4x1 mile relay team that ran a 15:51.91 at the 2024 Penn Relays, which today stands as the second-fastest outdoor mile relay time in the world.
At the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships in May, Liam came in fourth in the 3,000m and 11th in the 5,000m.
At Allentown High School, Liam was the Gatorade New Jersey Boys Cross Country Player of the Year and Boys Track & Field Player of the Year in 2019-20; in addition to winning the 3200m title at the Indoor Meet of Champions in 2019.
Liam’s trajectory to success was crystal clear even in high school, where he ran personal bests of 4:11 in the 1600m and 8:54 in the 3200m.
In today's conversation, Liam takes me through almost every single big performance over the past year and a half. Through this conversation you'll get a look into one of the best runners ever in the NCAA.
You won't want to miss this conversation.

0:00.0 | Don't dwell too much on the bad races. |
0:02.7 | That's something I always try to tell myself and a piece of advice I give to people. |
0:06.6 | And then when I find myself in that spot, I feel like it's really hard to listen to that advice and try to move on. |
0:12.2 | But I think the best thing you can do for yourself is just focus on the next race. |
0:15.6 | Just keep showing up every day, putting the effort in, putting the work in, and eventually you'll click. |
0:23.0 | Ladies and gentlemen, that was Liam Murphy today on the Running Effect podcast. If you are |
0:27.1 | not familiar with Liam, he actually was on the podcast close to a year and a half ago. And since |
0:31.1 | that point, he's been on an absolute tear specifically over this past year. He made the final |
0:37.1 | at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials last summer. |
0:41.2 | He had a really successful cross-country season. |
0:44.2 | It seemed like every race he lined up at, he was in contention for the win or winning |
0:48.6 | in the case of the big East cross-country championships. |
0:51.5 | I'm not mistaken, he won that race. |
0:53.9 | And then this indoor season, he ran |
0:55.4 | 735 in the 3K, 1310 in the 5K. He had a chip on his shoulder after not performing as well as he |
1:01.9 | wanted to at the indoor meet. And so then he went out and on his first race, outdoors at the Raleigh, |
1:07.0 | realized he ran 333.02, if I'm not mistaken, in the 1500 meters, a new collegiate record. |
1:14.6 | Liam's on fire. He's a super well-spoken guy, brought a lot of wisdom and insights to each of the races and more that I just mentioned. |
1:21.4 | I know you guys are going to enjoy getting an inside look at one of the best collegiate athletes, not just right now, but truly ever. |
1:29.2 | I mean, 333 is the fastest any collegiate has ever run. |
1:31.8 | So I think that is backed up that statement. |
1:34.2 | If you guys enjoy this one, share it with a friend, a teammate, family member, anyone who you think would find value and benefit from it. |
