For police forces across Europe, it was the Holy Grail.

They said it would be like cracking the enigma code.

If they could hack into the secret communication system used by international criminal networks,

then they'd be able to disrupt crime all over the world.

But the encrypted encroach at phones, these criminals used, when a toy is insecure.

A series of firecrackers marked the start of an armed raid

to catch a key figure in London's criminal underworld.

It's part of the country's biggest ever crackdown on organised crime.

Then, last summer, it happened.

European police forces infiltrated the encroach at phone system,

leading to more than a thousand arrests across Europe in a round of coordinated raids.

We're talking about hundreds of thousands of messages.

The hack began on April 1, 2020.

And the National Crime Agency in the UK then started receiving all this data.
