Welcome to 1947, the Meet the Press podcast.

It's an off year for elections.

We still have months to go before the midterms get underway.

And we don't exactly know how the American public is going to react to

how the unified Republican government in Washington has done.

But we do have a couple of elections to look for

to, for a sense of where things are heading.

And probably only one that will tell us something.

And that is the race for Virginia governor.

Virginia, of course, is, I think still a swing state.

What we're going to talk about that in a minute.

That is, of course, close and proximity to the nation's capital.

It doesn't have a lot of outside factors impacting the candidates.

The way, say, New Jersey's governor's race is conducted in the shadow of Chris Christie.

And the Virginia election is focused on topics that are central to the national

dialogue these days, whether it's Confederate monuments, health care, or the economy.

So my guest today is someone who knows a little something about the politics in the commonwealth of Virginia.

None other than the former governor, former lieutenant governor, former mayor of Richmond, Doug Wilder, governor Wilder.
