Hello everyone and welcome to talk nerdy. Today is Monday, June 8th, 2020 and I'm the host of the show

Kara Santa Maria and today we're going to be talking with Dr. Anne Harrington about her book

Mind Fixer psychiatry's Troubled Search for the biology of Mental Illness, but before we get into that

obviously I think there's a few things that are really, really important to say.

One thing that you may, I haven't maybe made always very clear about the show is that it's not uncommon for me to interview my guests sometimes weeks even months prior to them going to air because of my work schedule and simply because of you

know coordinating schedules with people is not uncommon for me to have

episodes quote in the can I also generally try to make sure that my show is really evergreen, that the focus is predominantly on science, and so because of that, obviously sometimes episodes are really out of sync with what's happening in the world around us, like the greater issues of the world.

Last week is a perfect example of that. Last week my show went to air just as here in the United States we really started to

see an increasing focus and increasing concentration on the really horrific experiences that African American citizens within this country have been dealing with since

Jamestown. I mean we're talking hundreds of years of torture, disenfranchisement, brutality, and dehumanization, sanctioned

by our government and by the many institutions and systems here.

So of course, although there's been an elevated presence around this

following George Floyd's death, Obviously this issue is not new.

Unfortunately for a lot of white people they are just now learning about this issue.

This episode is not going to be about this this episode is about something

entirely different although we do make mention of the climate that we're that

we're in right now there are you know thousands of resources online so you know the handful of things

that I that I just want to say here at the jump is that if you are a white

person living in America right now.

It is incumbent on you to educate yourself

and to work towards an anti-racist stance

and towards anti-racist action.
