Summary

with @nicolefv @jezhumble @smc90 One of the recurring themes we talk about a lot is how software changes organizations, and vice versa. But we've come a long way from the question of "does IT matter" to answering the question of what org structures, processes, architectures, and roles DO matter when it comes to companies -- of all sizes -- innovating through software and more.

Hi everyone. Welcome to the A6 and Z podcast. I'm Sonal. So one of the recurring themes we talk a lot about

0:06.9

on this podcast is how software changes organizations and vice versa. More broadly, it's really about

0:12.5

how companies, of all kinds, innovate with the org structures and tools that they have.

0:17.9

And today's episode, a rerun of a very popular episode from a couple years ago,

0:22.4

draws on actual research and data from one of the largest large-scale studies of software

0:27.3

and organizational performance out there. Joining me in this conversation are two of the authors of

0:32.5

the book Accelerate, The Science of Lean Software and DevOps by Nicole Foresin, Jez Humble, and Gene Kim.

0:39.2

We have the first two authors, so Nicole, who did her PhD research trying to answer the

0:43.7

elusive eternal questions around how to measure software performance in orgs, especially given

0:48.5

past debates, around does IT matter? She was a co-founder and CEO of Dora, which put out the annual state of

0:56.3

DevOps report. Dora was acquired by Google Cloud a little over a year ago, and she will soon be

1:01.9

joining GitHub as VP of Research and Strategy. And then we also have Jez Humble, who is CTO at Dora,

1:08.5

is currently in developer relations at Google Cloud, and is also the co-author

1:13.3

of the books, The DevOps Handbook, Lean Enterprise, and Continuous Delivery. In the conversation that

1:19.6

follows, Nicole and Jez share their findings about high-performing companies, even those that

1:24.3

may not think their tech companies, and answer my questions about whether there's

1:28.3

an ideal org type for this kind of innovation, whether it's the size of the organization,

1:33.1

the software architecture they use, their culture or people, and where the role of software

1:37.7

and IT lives within that. But first, we begin by talking briefly about the history of DevOps

1:43.0

and where that fits in the

1:44.3

broader landscape of related software movements.

1:46.8

So I started as a software engineer at IBM.
