Summary

Emotional reactivity is about having a knee-jerk, habitual reaction to something in the present moment that reminds you (consciously or unconsciously) of something unpleasant you experienced in the past.

Reducing emotional reactivity is an important goal on the spiritual path, since being highly reactive can keep you stuck in repetitive and unhelpful loops of behavior, thought, action, and feeling.

Join me for a discussion of:

  • what IS emotional reactivity, at its essential nature?
  • the 3 levels of emotional reactivity (and which one gets triggered first)
  • how emotional reactivity drains your energy and causes you to waste valuable time
  • the difference between reacting and responding
  • how to reduce your reactivity gradually and bring yourself back to the present moment (with real-time practices)

or you would like to apply. So what is emotional reactivity at its most essential level? If we were

1:57.0

to define it, we could say that emotional reactivity is a particular state of being,

2:03.2

2:11.4

Although we might think of emotional reactivity as being only emotional, as the name implies, so happening at the level of

2:20.6

emotion, there's actually three levels, at least, of being, that get triggered and that fuel

2:28.9

this kind of reactivity. So there's the mental level of emotional reactivity, which actually often

2:38.2

happens first, and we'll talk about this in just a minute. Then there's the actual emotional level

2:45.0

of emotional reactivity. And then there's the physiological level, which includes all of the physical sensations,
