Summary

Do you often find yourself trying to please everyone to keep the peace? Does conflict - or even the idea of conflict or disagreement - send you into a tailspin? Do you rely on others' praise and approval to feel ok about yourself?

If so, you might be stuck in a pattern of people pleasing and approval addiction. In this episode, I talk about where these patterns and behaviors often originate and how early childhood conditioning can set you up to people please as an adult. I also discuss the Fawn Response, the automatic response to trauma beyond fight, flight, or freeze. Finally, I share some suggestions for starting to move beyond these deeply engrained patterns, one step at a time.

Hello, dear listeners, and welcome to a new episode of Inner Work.

Today we're tackling the topic of people-pleasing and being addicted to approval and external

0:51.9

validation. This is a major issue for many of us, I think, especially if we

0:58.1

are empaths or highly sensitive people. And right now is a time where we're all being called

1:04.8

to reclaim our inner authority, to take our power back, to stop listening to what others want us to do and make our

own decisions from an empowered, conscious, confident place within ourselves. But of course,

1:20.0

it can be difficult to do all of that if you're stuck in a rut of people pleasing behaviors

with a stimuli or a situation or even a person that reminds you in some way of a past trauma.

1:52.4

And here we could be talking about current lifetime trauma or even extending back to past

life trauma. So your sympathetic nervous system is also activated and goes into fight or flight when you sense danger in your environment,
