Summary

What alienates us from the presence of God? How do we not succumb to fear of failure, but have faith in a better future? Pastor Erwin McManus brings a compelling message that reminds us where the real battle of our lives is won or lost: the battle of our inner world.

In 1 Kings 19:1-19 Elijah was afraid of a threat of death from Jezebel and ran for his life. After a great moment of courage where God provided for him, his faith was corrupted by fear. Fear is the negative expression of our faith, founded in a belief that the worst will happen to us. Pastor Erwin teaches us that whatever informs us, forms us; we must listen and pay close attention to the inner voices that shape our choices.

Our future is not destined to be a replica of our past. God empowers each of us to face our fears and run into our freedom. Though we can be tempted like Elijah to run away from our fears, God reminds us over and over in the scriptures that He will meet us in our fear and use it to make us stronger. God wants to shape our inner world in the midst of our biggest battle. It is through the mastery of our inner worlds that we will find peace.

“The warriors aren’t ready for battle until they come to know peace.”

Thank you for joining us today. I hope this talk inspires you, encourages you, and transforms you,

So I do not think it is incidental that I just released a book called The Way of the Warrior,

0:36.4

and I'm in a room with 8,000 warriors. But each book that I've had the opportunity right over

0:45.1

the years comes in a different way, and this one was sort of unusual. My wife, Kim, and I were driving

0:50.8

down the road, and we've been married 35 years, so sometimes when we're driving together, we're

0:56.0

thinking about different things. And we had one of those moments of silence. We were both

1:00.5

thinking about different things, and I cannot explain any other way, as I was just having this

1:05.5

moment of just reflecting and thinking about life, and just opening myself to the possibilities

1:12.5

of what God might want to say to me. I heard this voice in my soul, and I heard a very clear

1:18.0

declaration, and it was this. The warrior is not ready for battle until they have come to know peace.

1:27.2

This is the way of the warrior. And in that moment, I looked over to Kim, and I said, I know exactly

1:33.0

what my next book is going to be. It's going to be a battle for peace. And one of the things that

1:40.4

really struck me in that moment was how did that voice suddenly emerge out of all the voices inside

1:46.8

of me? I don't know if you've become honest with yourself, but there are a lot of voices inside

1:51.6

of you. And in fact, have you noticed that sometimes you have voices inside of you that disagree

1:56.8

with you? And you're wondering, how in the world can you disagree with me? You are me.

2:02.4

And that's because you're actually disagreeing with you. And if you pay careful attention,

2:06.6

you realize that your soul is cluttered and crowded by all these voices that you've allowed to

2:14.6

speak into your life. And strangely enough, so oftentimes the voices that say with us are the voices

2:21.2

that damage us and hurt us that leave us broken and shattered.
