Hello, and welcome back to Practicing Human, the podcast where every day we're getting a little better at life.

0:06.0

I'm your host, Cory Muscara, and in today's episode, we're going to talk about why great things always begin from the inside.

0:13.7

More to come on that in a moment. First, let's settle in together with the sound of the bells.

0:30.0

So there's a quote by Jim Quick. Jim Quick is the brain performance coach who has a popular podcast, popular speaker, and he says if an egg is broken by an outside force, life ends, but if it's broken by an inside force, life begins.

0:58.3

It's great things always begin from the inside. I like this. I think this is one of those quotes where we go, oh, yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

1:10.8

At least that was my impression when first hearing it. It's a nice example, one of an egg, how a force from the outside, yes, life ends, from the inside, though, that's the beginning of the life of life.

1:24.8

So two things breaking, but different potential meanings. Now, does this totally translate into our own life? I don't think entirely. I think one of the interesting things about outside things breaking from the outside, meaning life hitting us pretty hard is that, yeah, that can cause trauma that can cause significant pain, and it can also cause us to meet those moments for something within us.

1:54.4

To be activated, to meet what is arising. So I don't think just because there's a force from the outside for us, it means that life is ending, of course, but I do think there's also something nice about this idea of breaking our shell, our metaphorical shell, from the inside, and how the process of change can often feel like something is breaking.

2:22.4

We're emerging out of a shell, a former self, that we were embodying, that we knew well, is now starting to shift. Our belief systems are starting to shift, our sense of what was previously predictable, what we understood, the things we thought, again, the things that we believed, like all of that felt mostly fixed and reliable, and now it's up in the air, it's changing.

2:47.9

We feel a little soupy, we're going through a transformation, something is breaking, and I think the visual of breaking out of a shell can be comforting in those moments as we're going through that, recognizing that, actually, even though something is breaking, this could be the beginning of something.

3:07.9

This is new life emerging, a new me emerging, a different me emerging. And this episode isn't designed to go into all of the ins and outs of how that interchange happens and that process, but more to acknowledge that it often can feel like something breaking, and something breaking could be perceived as being broken from an outside force, damaging, or being broken from an inside force.

3:35.9

That's liberation, that's new life. So hope this gives you something to think about as you're going through your growth journey and can be supportive in a way, at the very least, can encourage you to continue on doing the work that you're doing.

3:49.9

Sometimes it can feel like things are breaking, to feel like big work, and trust that new life is on the other side.
