Summary

This week, Kate has Jessie Bernhardt on the podcast to discuss influence in the time of social injustice. Not only the response of influencers and the responsibility of having a platform, but also the importance of factoring in our own influence in our daily lives. They discuss the disparity of the response relative to other Black Lives Matter efforts, the responsibility of influencers in combatting social injustice, the importance of sharing, elevating (and tagging!) Black creators, a couple of the influencer scandals, and overall how we can be more inclusive in the workplace and in our daily lives.

I am a Chicago based author, entrepreneur, freelancer, some other things. More importantly,

0:13.4

I am a white girl who is continuously mortified at my lack of activity historically in the

0:19.6

space of social justice. As we talked about in the last episode, you know, I, going forward

0:28.6

want to focus on elevating more black voices. I've completely neglected to do this in the past

0:35.2

and I am struggling to reconcile that period. And beyond that, I, I, I, I have trouble

0:46.5

reconciling that I considered a topic like Black Lives Matter to not be in the, in my

0:55.7

lane in the pop culture realm. Because I, you know, try to avoid more serious current events,

And if I have for a second made, especially my black listeners, unclear on where I stand in terms of

1:14.8

wholeheartedly, unequivocally, not only thinking your life matters. God, that's the bare fucking

minimum. Of course it does. It should be celebrated and elevated and it should be a focal point

1:29.0

in my platform. I will never, ever, ever be able to tell you I'm sorry enough. I will never,

1:33.6

ever accept anybody telling me it's okay and I don't need anybody to ever thank me for any of this.

1:38.1

Like I just him like I can't, I'm just lying awake and I confused, mortified and like I just don't,

1:44.9

I don't know, I just, I don't know. Anyway, if you didn't let, I kind of explained some of this on

1:50.8

the last episode. If you didn't get a chance to listen to it, it's called a stream of social

1:55.8

consciousness. But now I want to just hit the ground running. And what I hope to do going forward

2:02.6

is to share more Black creators, to share the ongoing education I've been participating in,

2:08.3

to share the way I've always framed racial discussions in my personal life and to make it crystal

2:15.9

clear about the social issues I care about personally that I thus far neglected to incorporate

2:24.3

into my public facing content. It's, you know, every day I have different reflections and different
