I'm Amy Goodman.

We look now at how the people of Ecuador voted in a referendum to block oil drilling in the

Amazon Rainforest Yasuni Park.

But now the newly elected president, Danielle Nuboa, has said Ecuador is at war with gang violence and that quote

we are not in the same situation as two years ago. Nuboa has said oil from the

Yasuni could help fund that war against drug cartels.

Activists and indigenous people say they're concerned about his comments because their

victory had been hailed as an example of how to use the

Democratic process to leave fossil fuels in the ground. Well for more we're

joined by someone who helped lead that fight for this referendum and much more.

The Monte Nankimo is an award-winning Wawrani leader in the Ecuador and Amazon who co-founded Amazon Front Lines and the Sable Alliance.

Her recent piece for the Guardian is headline,
