A controversial visit to Ukraine.

Hello, live from the UK, this is the Marketplace Morning Report from the BBC World Service.

I'm Nick Kreshi standing in for Leanna Byrne.

The Indian Prime Minister Norendramodis in Ukraine not long after he met

the Russian President Vladimir Putin. The visit is significant because Kyiv and some Western

capitals had reacted sharply to his trip to Moscow in July.

The BBC's Europe correspondent Nick Beak, who's in Kyiv, says officials in India, are keen to

talk up the visit.

Officially they're saying this trip's all about boosting economic ties and other sort of cooperation.

But the background to this visit is that Mr Modi was in Russia six weeks ago

and that trip did not go down well with the Ukrainians.

That's because Norengra Modi was seen warmly embracing Vladimir Putin on a day that

Russian missiles killed more than 40 people across this country and hit a children's

hospital in the capital Kieve.

And at the time President Selanski said it was, to quote him, directly, a huge disappointment

to see the leader of the world's largest

democracy hugged the world's most bloody criminal. He's repeatedly called for

peace in Ukraine but has failed to condemn Russia's invasion.
