All around us would be crushed by vehicles

that are only inches away from the open sides of this rickshaw.

And this is the way many women travel in Delhi

in these open-sided, rather dangerous,

little three wheelers.

But they'll tell you they don't get into them

after eight o'clock at night.

And that's because they simply don't feel safe.

I'm Johanna Jolly and we're in Delhi

for this week's assignment on the BBC World Service.

The brutal gang rape here of a young girl

on a bus last December forced India

to look at the way it treats its women.

The attack was just one of many rapes

in a country where victims struggle for justice,

facing prejudice in the courts and years of delay.
