A bipartisan independent panel is calling for an overhaul of the Secret Service in a blistering

new report out today.

The panel was commissioned by President Biden after the July assassination attempt on former President Trump and was comprised of four

former senior government officials including former Homeland Security leaders Janet

Napolitano and Francis Townsend.

For more on the report's findings and the recommendations were joined by Carol Lening.

Carol, it's a pretty blunt assessment

of the Secret Service failures that led to a gunman being able

to take eight shots at former President Trump

at that Pennsylvania rally in the report they list an absence of critical

thinking a lack of ownership. Do the findings in this report line up with your reporting on that day?

I have to say I'm pretty proud of the Washington Post's reporting. My colleagues and I worked

on a lot of stories in the hours after 6 p.m. roughly 6 11 p.m. on Saturday

July 13th trying to understand what had gone so colossally wrong and this report from this independent panel

basically confirms all of our reporting in the days and hours immediately

after the assassination attempt and shooting by Thomas Matthew Crooks.

There was no real plan for preventing a person from being able to have a clear line of sight, in essence a clear shot at Donald

Trump from a building only 150 yards away.
