Summary

Behold the first official episode of Stories That Stick. What sort of magnificent acclaimed story are we covering first? (checks notes) Roland Emmerich's 1996 super blockbuster Independence Day?! Director and showrunner Ed Skudder (The Super Mario Bros Movie, Unikitty!, Dick Figures) joins host Chad Quandt to talk about why this movie caused a ripple effect through all future summer blockbusters including Ed's work, how it turbo-launched the careers of Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum, and why three decades later it still holds up. We also discuss being blockbuster scumbags, the chronology of the Fast franchise, and Apex Presidents.

All right. This is happening. This is the launch of a new podcast, technically, even though this is kind of a evolution of one that's been going on for over a decade. In case you haven't seen any of the recent updates to the feed, if you didn't see the trailer we put out, maybe you haven't noticed the logo has changed on your podcast app. Goosebuds is now Stories at Stick.

I really get a lot of energy out here from talking to fellow creatives and artists and aspiring

out, but talking about like the original art, the media that moved us, the stuff that stuck to us.

1:05.4

And I realized that was kind of what got me into doing goosebumps in the first place was goosebumps,

1:10.7

Arl Stein's books resonated with me, right? They really stuck to me and I was like, this is what horror can be, it can be kind of funny and weird and crazy. And that was one aspect of me. And it still is. Still means a lot to me. But as the show kept going on and we realized maybe not every goosebumps book is good, I'm sorry, R.L.

If you're going to kill me, you've lost your chance to do it.

1:32.1

I'm moving on.

1:34.5

Is what motivated me to become a writer, what like originally inspired me, is that overlap with goosebumps with other media.

1:43.2

Other movies, other comic books, other games.

1:46.0

I have a huge list of stuff that I would love to talk about with guests if they resonate with them as well.

1:50.4

But also want to hear what motivates them.

1:52.4

So this is what stories that stick will be.
