Oh, but that advertisement, she says, is bound to disappoint.

Anywhere you look for serenity apart from Christ, you will find it to be elusive.

And today we'll study another important attribute of Christ.

Serenity.

It's not a word that you often hear today, is it?

We rarely hear someone described as serene.

And that word serene or serenity certainly doesn't describe the era in which we live.

We're more familiar with things like, hurry, crazy busyness, 24-7 multitasking, off-the-chart stress, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, anything but serenity.

The dictionary says that some synonyms for serenity are tranquility, calmness, and peacefulness.

And antonyms, words that are the opposite, are agitation, panic, the opposite of serenity.

A serene heart is what the psalmist had when he prayed in psalm 131. Oh Lord, my heart is not lifted up.

My eyes are not raised too high. I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.

But I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
