Hello and welcome to the eagle and child, the hallowed pub of the Inklings.

0:11.0

This is a podcast where each week I share a beer with my friend Matt, and we discuss the

0:15.5

writings of the author known to the world as Clive Staples Lewis, C.S. Lewis, or Jack, as he was known to his friends.

0:24.4

Today is the inaugural episode, so it's going to be pretty short. This is all about introducing

0:29.3

you to the podcast and letting you know what to expect from here onwards. The goal of this podcast

0:35.4

is to get more people reading C. reading CS Lewis and to provide a virtual community

0:40.1

where people can read through his works together. And I'd like to begin by giving a little

0:45.4

explanation as to the genesis of this podcast. Because you see, here in San Diego, we have a

0:50.7

CS Lewis reading group, which is also called The Eagle and Child. And when we were

for CS-Lewis podcasts, and I was rather surprised that I pretty much came up empty.

1:18.2

And since a CS-Lewis podcast didn't exist, I thought it would be worth creating.

1:23.7

And it's tempting to try and make the perfect podcast, but as long as it doesn't exist,

1:28.4

it's not helping anyone. One of my favorite quotations is from G.K. Chesterton. He said,

1:33.5

if something's worth doing, it's worth doing badly. Basically, it's better to have something

1:38.3

rather than nothing. So we're going to begin by going through one of Jack's most popular

1:43.1

apologetics works, mere Christianity.

1:46.0

Now, I said earlier I didn't find any CS Lewis podcasts.

1:50.0

That's actually not quite true. I did find one podcast where a group of Christians were working their way through the book,

1:56.0

but they gave up early into book two. And that was the last episode they ever posted. So we have
