In episode 412 astrologer Demetra George joins the podcast to talk about the connection between the ancient Mesopotamian goddess Inanna, the Venus retrograde cycle, and the Barbie movie! During the course of the episode we talk about the ancient Mesopotamian myth of the descent of the goddess Inanna into the underworld, and how it is connected to the Venus synodic cycle, and especially the retrograde phase of Venus. I saw Demetra give a lecture in 2005 connecting the myth of Inanna with Venus retrograde, and then I was really pleasantly surprised to see a number of parallels with the myth show up in the Barbie movie that was released recently right when Venus stationed retrograde. Some of these parallels between Barbie and Inanna were pointed out in an article by a writer named Meg Ellison titled “Barbie is the new Inanna": https://wildhunt.org/2023/07/barbie-is-the-new-inanna.html Demetra and I have been talking about a lot of this for the past few weeks, and decided to record an episode on it, in order to dive deeper into some of these ancient myths surrounding the Venus retrograde cycle and talk about how they are still relevant today. In the process we covered a lot of interesting ground, and touched on a number of important and fascinating figures, including the first author in history who signed her name to her writings, a priestess of Inanna named Enheduanna that lived around 2300 BCE. In that way this episode builds a little bit on the previous discussion Demetra and I did earlier this year on Heliodora and the early history of women in astrology. We also talked about the nature of archetypes, planetary significations that have been lost through time, and a deeper understanding of the complex yet profound meanings of Venus and her cycles. 0:18.0	We've been talking about some of this over this past week and I'm glad we're having the chance to discuss it more thoroughly.
0:26.0	Yeah, so this is something that's come up over the past few weeks because part of the premise is that a Nana was one of the most revered and popular goddesses in ancient Mesopotamia and she was a goddess of love and fertility, but also a goddess of war.
0:45.0	And you've given lectures on a Nana before I remember attending a lecture of years back in 2005 where you talked about how this ancient myth of the descent of a Nana was connected with the Venus retrograde cycle.
0:59.0	And what was interesting recently that both you and I noticed and a lot of other astrologers noticed is that on July 21st, the Barbie movie was released and that was the same day the Venus station retrograde and at that time, a couple days later, there was a writer.
1:18.0	There was an article being passed round by a writer named Meg Ellis and who pointed out that there was actually a bunch of striking parallels with the myth of a Nana in the Barbie movie, which it wasn't clear that they were deliberate, but they may have just come up accidentally.
1:34.0	So I thought that we could talk about all of those topics today to see how it's all intertwined and some weird and kind of interesting way.
1:41.0	It's a fascinating premise that we're going to embark on here.
1:49.0	On one hand, the myth of the Nana speaks about her descent to the end of world and her return.
1:59.0	And within that, her, the nature of her relationship with her husband to move see.
2:06.0	But that myth of the dying and resurrected goddess or God was an ancient myth that manifested in many different cultures using different days and many cultures had different versions of that.
2:22.0	And so on one hand, it's an art type of story, but there are specific characteristics to the inanimate in particular that seem to be reflected in the Barbie movie.
2:37.0	So we're trying to hold the vision that it's both a larger story than only in Anna and yet many of the particulars are right there with the Nana story.
2:49.0	Yeah, and that's I guess that's part of the nature of archetypes is sometimes they bubble up in culture and transcend different times and different cultures and show up independently in different ways.
