Welcome to the documentary in the studio from the BBC World Service, the program that

investigates the creative process. I'm Antonia Quirk and in this edition we're

following production designer Maria Jerkovich as she works on the film My Policeman.

It's the 12th of January and I've just been asked to keep a diary of the filmmaking process for me on a new film.

Set partly in the 1950s, it stars Harry Stiles as police officer Tom, who's married to school teacher Marion while

secretly in love with museum curator Patrick.

It's a shoot that will take Maria from Brighton on the south coast of England to Venice,

all part of the course for award-winning Maria.

Since the 1980s, she's designed the sets, the locations, the aesthetic of such beloved and distinctive films

as Billy Elliot, The Hours, Mamma Mia, The Dig, The Imitation Game, Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy,

and more. I'm in the very initial stages of prep at the moment,

and I'm able to work from home, which is absolutely perfect.

Maria is working from home because this is the start of 2021. perfect. presents many challenges on a film set, expected ones like social distancing and crew members falling ill,

and more unexpected ones, such as studios being too busy or qualified staff being in short supply, these really were unprecedented times for the film industry.

This is going to be a completely new experience for me working together with quite a large

team more often than not being in the same room. for me working together with quite a large team.

More often they're not being in the same room as them,

we'll see, we'll see, we'll feel our way through it day after day.
