It's October 23rd, 2003. It's a Monday and Dora Rodriguez is in the tiny town of Sasabe, Mexico.

It's just across the US border with Arizona,

and today it's sunny and a little bit dusty.

We were wielding a beautiful library for the community because they never had a public library.

Dora is an advocate, she's an activist for migrant rights, and she's based in Tucson.

Excited that this beautiful library is coming up, that murals are done.

It is very welcoming.

The reason why Dora is in Sassave, Mexico is because she's been running a shelter for migrants there and she's also been getting involved in improving this town as a whole. Dora might be petite, but she's not

small in terms of the impact that she has in this area of the border. And this morning at the library something feels off.

But I could sense it was a different vibe.

It really was a different vibe that the locals were telling me something's happening.

This is scary because there was so many trucks different,

brain new white big trucks. You could not see who was inside because they are dark

but going fast and driving or slowing down so it it was different than what we're seeing all this time.

At the end of the day, Dora drives back across the small port of entry back into the U.S. and she drives home to Tucson.

The next morning, we'll load up our car again back to Sasabe, with brooms with things to clean up.

And during the hour and a half drive south to the border, Dora gets a warning.

I get a phone call for one of the women they work at the center and says Dorita

don't come. We are in a war.

There is a fight, there is gunshots all over these mountains and town.

Some houses are burning. We don't know what's happening please don't come

at the time sassame Mexico was a town of about a thousand residents. Families had been there for generations.
